Paint and What I’ve learned about it. . .
Holy cow! Paint colors are so hard for me! When we first moved into our house I wanted colors that would pop, and be fun for the kids rooms and calm, pretty colors in the commons spaces. I’ve never really chosen paint colors, at least not for a whole house so it has been a learning experience for me. Some of the choices were good, and some not at good. I thought I would pass off some of the wisdom that I have learned onto you, I hope it helps when you have to make these choices.
At the time we moved into our house, about four years, that is when Martha Stewart came out with her own paint line at Home Depot. I really like it because she took a lot of the guess work out of matching paint colors with trim and ceiling. The problem was that her line cost too much money and the paint wasn’t very good(that’s what the home depot guy told me). I never used her paint, so I don’t know but I loved the colors in her line so I was really sad to see it go! She had all her different colors coded so you can see which colors would go with each other. It was great, it made for more cohesive choices.
What I also think you should do when you are picking out paint colors is see how it looks in all lights and times of day. We recently how our windows cleaned by Cash. Shout out http://www.utwindowcleaner.com/) I was amazed at how much brighter our home was after they cleaned the windows. So if you think you have a good paint color did you also like it at night? What about in the morning how does it look? When was the last time you cleaned the windows?
I tend to gravitate more towards blues but I did not want my little boy to have a blue room and my little girl to have a pink room, I thought that was too stereotypical. I chose a deep yellow for my little boys room and I did a lime green for my little girls room. I hated the lime green, it was like a neon green, it was way too much for me! I tried to dull it down by adding a lot of pink decorations around the room, but it really didn’t matter what I did the green drove me crazy. I made myself wait to repaint it, and its been four years and I just repainted it this year, so it wasn’t a total waist! I liked the yellow color but it was pretty overpowering too(nothing like the crazy green) but it was pretty over-powering. I just painted that room over again this last year too, so it too laster 4 years, which, again is pretty good!
The things I’ve learned about paint colors is to take your time. If you are going to make your decisions quickly the likelihood of you liking your choice is a lot smaller. Read a lot of review on the different paint colors. If most people have liked it then chances are higher you will like the color too! When I painted the whole upstairs different colors the only color that I really, absolutely hated was the lime green and that was the color that I just chose on a whim. I might have liked a different lime green color but the color that was on the walls in my little girls room was way too extreme for me. I do think that if I would have taken more time then I would have liked my choice more.
I don’t know if I’m getting boring, but I’m starting to steer more towards neutral colors. I did the crazy colors but it really limited what I could do with the room. I have gone through and painted both the rooms different colors white. There is something about having clean, crisp clean and undemanding colors that make you feel like you can do anything with a room. I have noticed that it is more in style now but maybe everyone is feeling like me, and just doesn’t want to keep painting the same room over and over again!
The last thing that I’ve learned is that, for me, its worth it to get the more expensive paint. I actually just started getting it at the paint store. I was always a Home Depot person when it came to everything, but the paint from the paint store was not as expensive as I thought it would be, about the same price as the brands we got at Home Depot. The paint has been noticeably better for us and the people know what they are talking about, more so then those at Home Depot.
I hope you have enjoyed learning from my mistakes and that you will not have to make the same ones I made. It has been pretty fun to learn but I wish that we didn’t have to do so many thing the wrong way before we learn! Please feel free to share with me your favorite color.
